Celebrating a True Contemporary Artist

In 2021, Henry served as the curator of an art exhibit featuring budding visual artist Kate Luo. The goal: crafting descriptive placards in order to interpret and contextualize each of these Warhol-esque pieces for the public. Since then, the one-of-a-kind collection has traveled across the country to be presented at intimate gallery showings of connoisseurs.

Fred

This humble fish is, in many ways, a staple of the Spongebob Squarepants universe. And yet his character is often cloaked in anonymity, a single face in a sea of ever-whirling bodies. By singling out Fred as an individual, the artist elevates the everyman – the everyfish – and allows his story to be told. Fred is seen; Fred is heard.

In a multi-part masterpiece, the artist explores the complex and ambiguous nature of strength in the modern world. Rather than presenting Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles within a single canvas – as a team – the segmented presentation invokes ideas of separation and isolation. On the other hand, the cohesion of style, drama, and panache is undeniable. Does teamwork indeed make the dream work? Critics have asked, but the artist refuses to break her silence.

By reimagining the classic Nintendo character “Toad,” this portraiture investigates themes of aesthetics and the self. The artist forces us to consider a world where Toad can happily remove the iconic mushroom top from his head -- becoming something new as a result. And yet entrenched in this work is a question of identity. To the viewer, Toad immediately becomes less recognizable; but at the same time, perhaps the resulting emotional vulnerability allows one to appreciate a more authentic “Toad.”

Plugged In contrasts the lighthearted with the sinister in a startling critique of our current social media landscape. The vibrant colors of Peppa Pig’s mobile offers a visually-striking display, harkening to apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. Yet the work also possesses underlying skepticism about this cultural evolution, as well as its effect on the individual’s psyche. Does the subtle arch of Peppa’s mouth contain a repressed sense of discontentment? And can we, the viewers, find a sense of helplessness in the dark caverns of her eyes?

To encourage laughter is one thing -- but that humor in itself is a choice. The artist’s sharp satirical wit is prominently displayed in this vivid critique of slut-shaming culture. Unlike the Charlie Brown character Snoopy, who possesses inherent style, these slut-shamers don metaphoric “VIRGIN” shirts in order to display a delusional sense of morality and “coolness.” Of course, all of these details are contrasted with the common public knowledge that Snoopy does, in fact, fuck.

A Manifesto on the Earthly Experience, and What it Means to Live as an Artist

If you don’t understand what the piece means: don’t worry, because that’s the point. In an overt reference to Squidward’s ridiculed painting Bold and Brash, the artist elevates the work while simultaneously producing an exact replica. True greatness always goes unappreciated. We cannot fully comprehend the intense emotions at the core of Bold and Brash, but we comprehend even less so the complex creative genius that spurred a great artist to replicate such a poignant pre-existing painting.
